Finish the Battery Change Before Leaving the Table

Keep button and coin batteries away from children, secure the product’s battery compartment and immediately secure removed cells for appropriate collection. A used battery left on the table is still an unfinished adult task.

Choose a work setup that keeps children away from loose cells

The remote works again, so the adult answers a message and leaves the old coin battery beside the screwdriver. The useful finish line comes later than restoring power. Before opening the product, prepare a work area that keeps children away from the new and removed cells. Do not invite a child to sort batteries as an ordinary cleanup job or leave a loose cell in an accessible drawer for later.

CPSC warns that swallowed button and coin batteries can cause severe injury and death. It advises keeping children from playing with or contacting them. Treat replacement as an adult-controlled task from opening the package through securing the used battery. You do not need a frightening demonstration for the child. You need a setup in which the small removed item does not disappear into ordinary household clutter.

Check the compartment before returning the product

Follow the current instructions for the actual product and battery. CPSC advises checking toys for secured compartments and keeping products with accessible button batteries away from children when they lack a screw closure. A damaged compartment needs appropriate repair, replacement or disposal. Do not improvise a household fix and call it equivalent to the product’s required closure.

Make the return-to-use decision explicit. A device that powers on but has a missing screw or broken cover has not finished the same task as a properly secured device. Keep it away from children while the responsible adult resolves the condition. Record the product and question in your own notes if that helps follow-through. The worksheet cannot certify a compartment or authorize a repair the manufacturer has not approved.

Give the removed battery an immediate next place

CPSC directs adults to secure discharged cells immediately, using nonconductive tape over the terminals or around the cell and taking them to a battery-collection center. Follow current handling and local collection instructions for the actual battery. Keep the secured material away from children while awaiting that handoff. Do not leave a used cell loose because the device no longer has enough power to operate.

Prepare the collection arrangement before starting when possible. If the task is interrupted, the adult should secure the batteries and product before leaving the work area. This is a small change to the household definition of finished: the device condition is addressed, loose cells are no longer accessible and the used battery has a clear collection route. A reminder on next week’s list does not physically secure today’s table.

Review the whole replacement, not just the working remote

In a hypothetical household, the remote works but the adult notices the old battery still beside a cup. They complete the secure handling and collection arrangement, then check the work surface before returning it to ordinary use. The example shows an unfinished step being completed. It does not prove that the household has eliminated every small-object hazard or that every product uses the same battery design.

If you suspect a child swallowed or was exposed to a button or coin battery, seek immediate professional help. CPSC lists U.S. Poison Help at 800-222-1222 for urgent treatment information. Do not delay that response to finish notes or search for symptoms. Use this page for prevention planning and later process review. A suspected ingestion belongs with immediate medical and poison-control guidance, not a household experiment.
