When the Carbon Monoxide Alarm Sounds, Go Outside Before Investigating

If the CO alarm sounds, move outside to fresh air immediately, call emergency services and account for everyone. Do not reenter until emergency responders give permission; do not search indoors for the source.

Make the first action clear before the alarm sounds

A sounding carbon monoxide alarm is not an invitation to walk around the house looking for an explanation. CPSC directs occupants to move outside to fresh air immediately and call emergency services, the fire department or 911. If this is happening now, take those actions. The planning notes on this page belong to advance preparation or later review, never before leaving.

Teach the household the instruction in words everyone can understand. Keep children with the responsible adults under the household’s actual assistance arrangements. A child should not be assigned to check the furnace, read appliance controls or collect evidence of a problem. Adults can prepare the exit and assistance plan calmly beforehand. They do not need certainty about which appliance is involved to respond to the alarm.

Take the household count outside

CPSC calls for a head count after the emergency call and warns against going back inside until emergency responders permit it. Explain that boundary before a child asks to retrieve something. A quiet alarm or a remembered open window is not the family’s authority to declare the home clear. Follow the responding professionals’ instructions and tell them if anyone is unaccounted for.

During advance planning, decide how adults will account for visitors and people who need assistance. A guest in a spare room is part of the household count that night. Keep the plan suitable for the people actually present, including a caregiver who may be there while a parent is away. Avoid making the arrangement depend on one adult carrying a particular phone at every moment.

Learn the device during ordinary maintenance time

Read the manufacturer’s current instructions for the actual alarm when there is no emergency. Different signals can indicate an alarm, maintenance need or end of life. Resolve uncertainty through the manufacturer or appropriate fire-safety authority before it becomes a midnight argument. Do not make a universal beep-count rule from a device you saw online. Do not silence a CO alarm and remain inside to troubleshoot it.

CPSC notes that a test button checks circuitry rather than proving sensor accuracy. Follow the product’s maintenance and replacement instructions instead of calling a button press a complete inspection. Record the model or instruction location privately and name who will handle an unanswered maintenance question. This page does not authorize appliance repairs. Suspected equipment problems belong with the appropriate qualified people and emergency response.

Keep permission to return separate from repair arrangements

Responders allowing reentry and a qualified person servicing a faulty appliance are different decisions. CPSC says a malfunctioning appliance identified as the source should not be operated until properly serviced by trained personnel. Do not compress those steps into “the alarm stopped, so everything is fixed.” Keep the actual instruction and responsible person clear without making a child carry the repair conversation.

In a hypothetical planning discussion, a child says they would grab the family tablet first. The parent corrects that step and confirms the outside assistance arrangement with the caregiver. Later notes identify the unresolved alarm-instruction question for the manufacturer. The finished page should describe what the adults have prepared and what remains open. It cannot certify indoor air, diagnose exposure or give permission to reenter a building.
