Check the Assignment Before Calling AI Help Acceptable

Read the current assignment and school guidance, identify the exact proposed assistance and ask the teacher when permission or disclosure is unclear. Preserve the child’s own learning and honest authorship.

Name the proposed help precisely

A child says they want help with homework. That might mean understanding an instruction, checking a spelling choice or generating the entire answer. Ask what the tool would actually do before deciding whether the assistance fits the task.

The Institute of Education Sciences describes limited and mixed evidence about AI in education and emphasizes supporting student thinking and teacher expertise. This does not establish permission for a particular assignment. The teacher’s actual purpose and current school rules remain necessary information.

Read the current instruction

Check whether tools are permitted, restricted or subject to acknowledgment for this work. Do not assume that permission on a previous project carries forward. If the instruction is unclear, ask the responsible teacher rather than declaring every use cheating or every use acceptable.

Follow actual account eligibility, privacy and access requirements as well. A homework question does not authorize creating an account through an adult’s identity, entering private student information into a service or accepting an unsuitable data-sharing arrangement. An offline question to the teacher remains an option.

For an ordinary assignment, ask the child to explain the next step in their own words before choosing any assistance. If they cannot identify the instruction, the useful help may be reading the task together or asking the teacher a question. Generating a finished answer can conceal that unresolved starting point. Where the teacher permits a specific tool, keep the permitted function distinct from every other function it offers. Permission to check spelling does not establish permission to generate an argument. A parent can help the child formulate a clear question about that boundary. Keep the teacher's answer with the assignment instructions so the household follows the actual decision, rather than relying on a general impression that technology is encouraged at school.

Keep authorship visible

Our editorial standard is that generated work must not be passed off as the child’s unaided thinking. Where a permitted tool is used, follow the teacher’s required acknowledgment and check factual claims against suitable sources. A fluent answer does not establish accuracy or show that the child understands it.

Imagine a child presenting a paragraph they cannot explain. Instead of polishing it further, return to the assigned question and seek suitable teaching support. The immediate task is learning what the assignment asks, not making the submission look more advanced than the child’s understanding.

Resolve the actual submission decision

If assistance was already used in a way that may conflict with the instructions, ask the teacher how to correct the work and describe the use honestly. Do not invent a private workaround or promise that a detector score settles authorship.

Use the notes for the instruction, proposed assistance, permission and learning check. Keep student identifiers and assignment content out of any shared version. A completed homework file and demonstrated understanding are different outcomes; the family should be honest about which one it has actually established.
