Read Kept and Sent Together in John 17

Read John 17:6-23 with its requests to keep the disciples, sanctify them in truth and send them in view. Do not replace that connected prayer with a single universal isolation plan.

Listen to the prayer's actual addressee and people

John 17:6-23 is part of Jesus' prayer to the Father. He speaks concerning those given to him, the words they have received and the Father's sending of him. Read that setting before turning a line from the prayer into a parent's private instruction for a particular activity.

The prayer contains substantial claims about the Father, Son and those who believe. Ask the family who speaks, to whom and about whom. Those questions are the beginning of attention, not a replacement for the theology. A child may need more than one sitting to understand an unfamiliar expression. Keep the selected range visible so the family knows which portion of the larger prayer it has actually read.

Keep the contrast within the request

Jesus speaks of the world's hatred and says he does not ask that the disciples be taken out of the world, but that they be kept from evil. Read both parts. The prayer names a real danger without making physical removal the request expressed in this sentence.

This does not decide every parent's duty about an unsuitable setting or remove necessary protection. It does prevent a summary that says the prayer asks for total withdrawal. Do not use a broad label such as worldly to avoid explaining the actual concern in a present situation. If a place or activity presents a real problem, name that problem accurately and make the appropriate responsible decision rather than claiming the verse supplied a universal venue list.

Read truth, sending and unity as connected concerns

The prayer asks for sanctification through truth, identifies God's word as truth and speaks of sending the disciples into the world. It then includes those who will believe through their word and asks concerning their unity. Read these connected concerns without making unity mean that Christian truth no longer matters or that every difference has vanished.

The same selected prayer can speak about opposition and mission. A family word map should therefore note how the surrounding sentence uses world instead of forcing one simplistic meaning onto every occurrence. This exercise supplies no original-language analysis. It asks the reader to follow the actual sentences and bring a difficult theological question to responsible church teaching with its reference intact.

Give a present concern its own accurate name

Our editorial application is to review an adult explanation. Imagine declining an optional activity solely with the claim that Jesus prayed for believers never to be near anyone outside the church. Correct that description of the prayer. Then explain the actual practical or moral concern you have, if there is one, and decide the activity on those honestly stated grounds.

Use the notes for the people prayed for, the keeping request, truth and sending, and the later unity request. A child need not defend an entire institution to ask what the passage means. The adult can teach Christian distinctiveness and maintain appropriate care while acknowledging what this prayer actually asks. Finish the reading with the connected requests still audible, not a substitute rule the family has invented.
