Read Matthew 22 Before Ranking Love and Responsibility Against Each Other
Identify the testing question and Jesus’ connected answer. Apply it to a real duty without inventing an excuse to neglect either God or neighbor.
Begin with the question in the scene
Matthew 22:34-40 describes a question about the great commandment in the law. It is asked to test Jesus. Read that setting before asking a child to name whichever family rule feels most important. The passage concerns Jesus’ teaching, not a vote on household preferences.
Ask who speaks, what is asked and how Jesus answers. Keeping these simple observations visible prevents an adult from using a familiar verse as a heading over a lesson the passage never actually gives.
Read both commandments
Jesus names love for the Lord with heart, soul and mind, then love for one’s neighbor as oneself. He says the law and prophets hang on these two commandments. Read the answer through to that final statement rather than separating one sentence from the other.
Do not interpret love as approving every request. Nor should devotion to God become a quick excuse for treating an actual neighbor carelessly. Questions about the law, worship and Christian obedience need fuller teaching than this short family reading can settle. Keep that limit explicit.
A useful family question is whether the chosen application actually concerns the neighbor's good or merely the adult's convenience. A parent may prefer a quick agreement, while another person needs an accurate explanation or an appropriate limit. The command to love does not make every request equally wise or every disagreement unloving. Hear the actual circumstances before assigning a duty. If the family chooses an ordinary service, ask what the recipient needs and whether the offer is welcome. A child can help with a suitable task without being asked to assess another person's heart. Return to Jesus' words after discussing the example so that the application remains one concrete response to the command, rather than a claim to have exhausted its meaning.
Bring one concrete duty into the conversation
Picture a household preparing to leave for worship while an adult refuses a simple agreed duty and calls the delay somebody else’s problem. Our editorial application is to examine the adult’s conduct, including whether the responsibility was fairly assigned. The verse cannot settle an arrangement whose facts have not been heard.
Name the actual task and person affected. A family might prepare needed materials earlier or share an ordinary job differently. Avoid grand claims about who loves God most. A specific responsibility gives the adults something they can repair without making a child judge everyone’s spiritual standing.
Make the next action honest
Write a suitable action, its owner and the agreement it follows. If the situation includes harm, coercion or an unsafe request, seek appropriate help rather than treating this worksheet as a reason to comply. Care for a neighbor does not require surrendering necessary protection.
Return to the passage when the discussion ends. Record what Jesus says and mark your chosen household practice as an application. The family can keep examining its conduct without claiming that completing one job fulfills the whole depth of the command to love God and neighbor.

Hypothetical example: Adults review an agreed preparation task and change who will do it before the next departure. They do not ask a child to rank the family’s love for God.
