Write Down the Recipe Change Before Calling It the New Version
Keep the original recipe. Record each exact change beside the step it affects, mark whether it was actually tried, and save a clear version the next cook can identify.
Keep the original before editing the family favorite
Someone says the household version uses a different ingredient, but the saved recipe still shows the original. Preserve that original before writing an adaptation. Name its source, date or version, and keep a retrievable copy in the household’s chosen place. Then create a separate change record. A loose note saying less of that or add the usual amount does not explain a method to another adult. Start with the precise change the cook made or proposes to make. The record should allow someone to follow the original intentionally, rather than requiring them to reconstruct it from a page that has been repeatedly overwritten.
Record the amount and the affected instruction
Write the original ingredient or action, the exact replacement or adjustment, and the method step it affects. Keep the units used in the actual recipe. If the note concerns a cooking step, record the instruction itself rather than only a guessed time. Do not silently change a required safety endpoint while describing the edit as a flavor adjustment. A hypothetical cook who used an optional topping separately should record that serving change at the topping instruction, not delete the topping from every future shopping list. Where the change has consequences the adult cannot establish, keep it as an unresolved proposal rather than a finished method.
Distinguish tried, proposed and remembered
Use clear status words. Tried means this exact change was used on the identified occasion. Proposed means it has not been used yet. Remembered means someone recalls a change but has not established its details. Record what was actually observed after a trial, such as whether the available dish accommodated the batch, without inventing a test result or calling the change universally better. A single preference is a preference. It does not establish a nutrition benefit, a safe storage period or a reliable result under different conditions. If the note lacks an amount, ask the person who made the adjustment before turning their memory into an instruction.
Give the next cook a readable version
Keep one current household version with its original reference and dated change list. Tell the next adult whether to use the original or the adaptation for the planned meal. Remove conflicting loose copies from the active recipe place only after the adults agree which one remains current; retain the original record where it can be found. An adaptation still needs current package information and appropriate food-handling guidance. FDA identifies cleaning, separation, cooking and chilling as food-safety steps. A household version note does not replace those requirements or certify an ingredient substitution for someone with an established restriction.

Let the record say exactly what happened
Ephesians 4:25 calls for truthful speech with one’s neighbour. Our editorial application is a recipe record that distinguishes an actual adjustment from a confident-sounding family memory. Use the worksheet to leave the next cook the original, the exact change and its status. If the household decides to return to the original, write that decision plainly instead of leaving the unsuccessful proposal in the active instructions. The next useful review comes when another cook uses the version or when the relevant product changes. A familiar recipe deserves an honest paper trail, especially when familiarity has made the adults stop explaining what they actually do.
Family Recipe Version and Change Record
- Identify and save the original recipe before editing.
- Write the exact change and the step it affects.
- Separate actual use, proposals and uncertain memory.
- Tell the next cook which version to use.
Family Recipe Version and Change Record
A suggestion and a tried change need different labels.

Hypothetical example: an adult saves the original page, records the exact optional topping arrangement used at one dinner, and leaves an untried ingredient idea marked proposed.
