Decide About Each Partly Thawed Freezer Package

After a freezer interruption, assess each food with the official frozen-food chart. Ice crystals or a temperature at 40°F or below may permit refreezing, but food-specific exceptions still apply.

Do not decide for the freezer as one object

After a freezer interruption, packages do not all supply the same evidence. One may still contain ice crystals while another has softened differently. Begin with the actual food and the available facts about this event. Keep the freezer closed while waiting when appropriate, and follow immediate official emergency instructions before doing a food inventory.

Once an adult can assess the food, make decisions package by package. Do not let a frozen item at the back certify everything near the door. Keep unknown history visible. If you cannot establish the facts required by the guidance, do not replace them with a guess about when the power probably returned. The task is deciding what can be used or refrozen, not rescuing the original menu.

Match the evidence to the frozen-food chart

FoodSafety.gov says frozen food may be safely refrozen if it still contains ice crystals or is at 40°F or below, though quality can suffer. It directs readers to assess items separately and never taste food to determine safety. Use the frozen-food section, rather than borrowing the refrigerated-food outage rule for every package.

Read the row and column together. In the chart, meat, poultry and seafood exposed to temperatures of 40°F or above for more than two hours are marked for disposal. The chart gives different directions for some other foods. Ice cream and frozen yogurt are marked discard in both listed conditions. A general refreezing statement therefore needs the food-specific row attached to it.

Write the observed condition without improving it

Identify the package, any ice crystals actually present and any valid temperature reading. Record when the check happened. Do not call a food measured because it felt cold to your hand, and do not invent a precise temperature from a frosty wrapper. Keep any known cross-contact or other handling concern separate for appropriate food-safety guidance; refreezing cannot erase a different problem.

In a hypothetical review, an adult uses separate rows for a partly frozen meat package and softened ice cream. The meat decision follows its actual condition and history; the ice cream does not inherit that decision. Another package with an unresolved history remains a question for the applicable guidance. No one takes a bite to decide which answer feels more economical.

Finish the food action before reorganizing

Carry out the chart-directed disposition and keep food awaiting a decision from being casually served. For food that may be refrozen, follow its appropriate packaging, storage and later preparation directions. Refreezing can be permitted while texture or flavor still changes. Discuss that quality choice after the safety decision has a sound basis.

Use the notes for one package or repeat them for a small group with the same established facts. Record the chart row, actual evidence and action, then identify any unresolved item needing further help. Our Christian editorial application is honest stewardship during a loss. The cost of the food deserves acknowledgment, but it cannot supply a missing temperature or turn one chart row into permission for the whole freezer.

Put it into practice

Decide About Each Partly Thawed Freezer Package - working notes

  1. Identify the package and actual interruption evidence.
