Keep Raw Chicken Out of the Rinsing Routine

USDA advises against washing or rinsing raw poultry because the practice can spread bacteria. Use proper handling and cooking rather than a rinsing ritual.

Change the step without insulting the cook

A relative reaches for the faucet with raw chicken in hand. The useful response is a clear kitchen instruction, not a speech about how their family did everything wrong. Say that this meal will follow the current USDA guidance and leave rinsing out. Respect for the person does not require keeping every inherited preparation habit. An adult can receive correction without surrendering dignity, and the person correcting can speak plainly without turning dinner into a contest.

Agree before opening the package whenever possible. Last-second criticism beside a busy sink invites an argument while raw food is already being handled.

Understand what the rinse changes

USDA explains that washing or rinsing raw meat and poultry can increase cross-contamination by spreading bacteria to other foods, utensils and surfaces. Rinsing or soaking chicken does not destroy bacteria. The fact that the chicken looks cleaner is not evidence that this preparation step made it safer. The water's appearance cannot answer what reached a nearby surface.

This is a specific change to the washing practice. Separate raw and ready-to-eat food, appropriate handwashing and cleaning still matter. Removing the rinse does not make every other preparation choice correct. Think of it as closing one unnecessary crossing in the kitchen, while the remaining traffic still needs sensible routes.

Give proper cooking its actual job

USDA identifies 165°F as the safe minimum internal temperature for poultry. Use an appropriate food thermometer and the applicable food and cooking guidance; do not substitute a rinse, browned surface or remembered cooking time for the required check. Follow the product's directions and keep raw-food handling with a responsible adult. A child can help with a suitable clean task away from the raw preparation area. Tell the helper which items are ready to carry and which utensils remain with the cook. Clear instructions matter most when several people are trying to finish different parts of dinner at once.

In a hypothetical meal, the adult removes the washing step from the written recipe note and confirms who will check cooking completion. That is a changed procedure, not a claim that a particular package or meal has been inspected by this article.

Prepare for the habit to reappear

Put the agreed instruction where the actual cook will see it. If different adults prepare poultry, discuss the change with each of them instead of assuming a note reached everyone. Plan the appropriate cleanup for the raw-food work and follow official cleaning directions and product instructions. Do not invent a sanitizer mixture or invite children to handle contaminated equipment as a lesson in responsibility.

If rinsing has already occurred, acknowledge the actual contact and use the relevant food-safety guidance to address it. Concealing the event to avoid embarrassment makes the next adult's job harder. Our Christian editorial application is teachability expressed in practical care. The goal is a meal prepared responsibly, with the revised step understood well enough to survive the next busy evening.
