Help Your Child Notice When a Recommendation Is Also an Advertisement
Look for the disclosed relationship, read the actual claim, and make the household purchase decision separately. A familiar face is not a reason to skip the questions.
Pause at the recommendation, not only at the price
A child shows you a familiar creator holding a product and says, 'They use this, so it must be the one to buy.' Before discussing the price, examine the recommendation together. What exactly was said? Was the creator demonstrating a feature, giving an opinion, or promising a result? A cheerful scene can make those different claims feel like one thing. Keep them separate.
Do not begin by calling the creator dishonest. You may have no evidence of that. The useful lesson is how to read a commercial message from someone the child enjoys watching. Familiarity can make a recommendation feel like advice from a friend, but the buying decision still belongs with the household's actual needs and permissions.
Notice the relationship the creator discloses
The Federal Trade Commission's Disclosures 101 guidance explains that payment, free products and other material connections can matter to an endorsement. It calls for disclosures that are easy to notice with the endorsement. Look for ordinary words such as 'ad' or 'sponsored,' and read what they tell you. A disclosed connection gives you information for weighing the recommendation; it does not by itself prove the product is poor.
If you cannot find a disclosure, do not invent a secret payment or declare a legal violation from a glance. Record what was actually exposed and what remains unknown. This family exercise teaches reading and judgment. It does not appoint a parent or child to determine whether a particular creator has complied with every advertising requirement.
Give the product a question of its own
Ask what job the product would do in your household. Then identify the specific information needed to assess that job. A creator enjoying a product does not establish that it fits your child's needs, works with equipment you own, or merits its current cost. Use appropriate product information and responsible adult judgment for those questions. Do not ask a child to test a health or safety claim.
Try a hypothetical comparison: a creator likes the color of a storage case, while your child needs to know whether the school supplies will fit. Both statements can be true, but only one answers the practical question. Write that question before returning to the sales message. You can admire the presentation and still leave the product unpurchased.
Keep permission separate from persuasion
Make the family decision through the usual adult process. 'We have noticed the sponsorship; now we will consider whether we need this' is a complete next step. A disclosure does not create permission to buy, and a persuasive review does not create a deadline the family must accept. If the answer is no, explain the actual reason without turning the creator into a villain.
Proverbs 18:13–17 commends hearing before answering and seeking further understanding. Our editorial application is to slow down long enough to know what a recommendation supports. Use the Recommendation and Relationship Check for one example, then put the screen away. The goal is a child who can ask a useful question, not a household that treats every enjoyable video as a courtroom.
Recommendation and Relationship Check
- Record the exact product recommendation and the claim you heard.
- Identify the disclosed relationship without guessing at unreported payments.
- Write the practical product question the household needs answered.
- Separate the adult permission decision from the creator’s recommendation.

Hypothetical example: A sponsored case demonstration shows its color; the family still checks the actual dimensions before deciding whether it fits.
