Rain Does Not Turn the Garage Into a Grill Space
Use gas and charcoal grills outdoors in an appropriate location. CPSC says never use them in a garage or other listed enclosed or unsuitable spaces; choose another cooking plan when the outdoor setup cannot be used.
Change the location decision before lighting
Rain begins just as the family is ready to grill. Moving the grill into the garage can seem like a small change that protects dinner from the weather. It changes the safety conditions instead. Keep the outdoor grill outdoors, and decide whether an appropriate outdoor location is usable before any fuel is lit.
A meal promise is allowed to change. Tell the household that the cooking arrangement no longer fits rather than trying to preserve the menu at any cost. The adult responsible for the grill should also own this decision. A child holding an umbrella or a relative waiting at the table cannot make an unsuitable location acceptable. Plan the alternate meal while there is still time to handle the food properly.

Use outdoors in its actual meaning
CPSC’s grilling guidance says to use gas and charcoal grills outside only, in well-ventilated areas, and never indoors, in a garage, breezeway, carport, porch or under a surface that will burn. It identifies fire and carbon-monoxide hazards. Its separate charcoal guidance specifically rejects cooking in a garage even when the door is open.
Do not reduce that instruction to opening another door or placing a fan nearby. Follow the grill manufacturer’s placement and operating directions along with the applicable fire-safety guidance and local restrictions. A favorable weather report or the absence of a previous incident does not establish that today’s proposed location is suitable. If a safe permitted arrangement cannot be established, do not use the grill there.

Choose an alternative the kitchen can finish
Use an appropriate indoor appliance only for the tasks it is designed to perform, following the food’s full cooking directions. An outdoor grill does not become an indoor appliance because dinner is late. If the chosen food or available equipment cannot fit a different safe method, choose another suitable meal and give the original food its proper storage.
In a hypothetical evening, rain makes the intended outdoor setup unusable. The adult keeps the grill out of the garage, selects another meal and tells the waiting family what will actually be served. No one claims that the change guaranteed a pleasant evening or eliminated every cooking hazard. It resolves the specific pressure to move an outdoor cooking device into an unsuitable space.

Keep the responsibility through shutdown
CPSC advises never leaving a hot grill unattended and keeping children away from the grill area. The responsibility continues after the last food leaves it. Follow the equipment and fuel instructions for shutdown, cooling and storage; do not bring a warm charcoal grill into an enclosed space to clear the patio quickly.
These working notes belong to advance preparation, not emergency troubleshooting. If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, follow the emergency exit-and-call instructions immediately rather than completing a location checklist. For ordinary planning, leave a usable outdoor option or a clear alternate dinner. The adults have kept their real responsibility when the food is handled appropriately and the cooking location follows its actual limits, even if the original menu has changed.
