Check the Transport Policy Before Offering a Last-Minute Ride

Keep the athlete appropriately supervised while responsible adults arrange an authorized option. In MAAPP-covered travel, one-on-one transport is restricted and relevant consent requirements and exceptions must be checked through the actual policy.

Keep the waiting arrangement safe

A pickup plan changes and a coach wants to help by driving the athlete home. Before offering that solution, keep the child appropriately supervised under the program’s current procedures and contact the responsible adults through approved channels.

A child’s request, an adult’s good intention or a short distance does not establish that a ride is authorized. Do not make the athlete solve a conflict between staff convenience and safeguarding requirements. The adults own the transport decision and the care arrangement while it remains unresolved.

Read the actual transport rule

The U.S. Center for SafeSport describes restrictions on one-on-one in-program transport between Adult Participants and Minor Athletes, with defined exceptions and relevant consent requirements. These MAAPP provisions concern covered participants in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement.

Use the current organization-specific policy and its authorized guidance to determine what applies. Other programs can have different or additional requirements. Do not create an exception or informal consent process from this article, and do not assume permission for a different trip covers the changed arrangement.

Treat a changed pickup as an unresolved adult arrangement until the permitted option is confirmed. Identify who currently supervises the athlete, who is contacting the guardian and which program person can clarify the transport policy. Those are active responsibilities, not names entered once and assumed to be available. If a proposed option changes again, check it again rather than extending permission by inference. A different driver, additional passenger or destination can affect the arrangement that was actually approved. Keep the athlete informed in suitable terms so they know which responsible adult is helping. They should not have to persuade a coach to stay, arrange their own exception or carry private messages between adults who have not finished deciding how the handoff will occur.

Arrange an authorized alternative

Ask the responsible program person and guardian which permitted option is available. Keep the decision within the actual supervision, driver and communication requirements. An emergency needs the appropriate emergency response; it is not a reason to improvise ordinary transport rules.

Imagine a delayed guardian and a coach who cannot establish that a proposed one-on-one ride meets policy. The coach maintains the approved waiting arrangement while an authorized alternative is confirmed. The athlete need not be told that following the process makes them inconvenient.

Verify the handoff that actually happens

Record necessary details through the organization’s appropriate restricted process. Confirm that the actual receiving adult or authorized transport arrangement matches what was agreed. A text proposing a ride is not a completed pickup.

Use these general notes for the policy source, responsible roles and pending step, not a child’s address or travel details. Review the recurring problem with program leadership afterward. A clearer future pickup plan can reduce confusion, but it cannot replace the action-time check when circumstances change.
