Make an Outgrown Sports-Gear Handoff Honest and Useful

Confirm the gear belongs to your household, describe its condition honestly and ask whether the intended recipient accepts it. Follow current program and manufacturer requirements for suitability. Do not represent a visual inspection as proof that protective equipment is safe.

Confirm ownership before promising someone else the gear

A child has outgrown an item, but that does not establish that the household owns it. It may have been borrowed, issued by a club or promised back at the season’s end. Check the actual arrangement before offering it to another family. Record the person or organization that can authorize the handoff when ownership is unclear. A generous intention cannot give away something another person entrusted to you. Let the child help identify their items under supervision, but have an adult settle the ownership question and any agreed return duty before a new recipient is contacted.

Describe what is known about the condition

Look at the actual item and record its model or type, size and visible condition without exaggeration. Mention missing parts, changes, damage or an unknown history instead of hiding them to make the offer attractive. Do not guess about protective performance, certification or suitability from a clean appearance. The recipient and responsible program need the appropriate current information and checks for the item’s intended use. If the required history or directions cannot be established, hold the offer rather than calling the gear “ready for competition.” This page is a communication record, not a technical inspection standard or an equipment safety certificate.

Ask whether the recipient accepts this specific item

A team collection or another family may have particular needs and acceptance requirements. Ask about the actual item before arriving with a bag of unwanted gear. Include the condition you already recorded, and respect a declined offer. Do not make the recipient explain their finances or publicly thank your family as a condition of receiving it. If a program accepts gear only through a designated coordinator, use that route. A name on an old donation notice is not proof of current acceptance. The worksheet keeps the recipient’s answer and any requirement beside the item so nobody confuses a proposed handoff with an approved one.

Follow the proper care and suitability process

Use the manufacturer’s actual care instructions for any cleaning you will do, and ask the receiving program which checks are required before use. Do not improvise repairs, remove warnings or alter an item to make it appear acceptable. If specialist evaluation or another responsible check is needed, arrange that through the appropriate person before the gear is used. Keep a held item clearly separate from an approved donation. For gear used to protect a child, uncertainty deserves a real answer, not a sales-like claim that it has “plenty of life left.” The receiving adult must be able to make an informed decision.

Finish the handoff with the agreed information

Arrange a practical delivery time, place and responsible adult. Include only necessary item information and the actual documents or directions agreed on; do not share another child’s private records with the gear. Mark when the recipient actually receives the item and which issue remains unresolved. If the collection cannot accept it, bring it back and choose a suitable alternative rather than leaving it outside. Let a child carry an age-appropriate part of the task under supervision, including matching the item with its label. The adult is responsible for the suitability claim and the final arrangement.

Measure completion by a useful receipt

Use the free Outgrown Gear Handoff Record for ownership, honest condition, acceptance and actual delivery. In a hypothetical family, a borrowed item is returned to its owner while a separately owned item is offered to a coordinator who confirms acceptance and the needed program checks. Luke 16:10–13 connects faithfulness in entrusted things with serving God rather than money. Our application is to handle both ownership and generosity faithfully; the passage does not approve a particular piece of equipment. Review whether the recipient got what was agreed. An emptied closet is not enough if the next family receives an inaccurate promise.
